Twins 5, Indians 4

Joe Nathan made it interesting in the ninth, but the Twins managed to pull within 4 1/2 games of the Tigers with 18 left to play, including seven against Detroit. Here’s the link to my game story…

It had been several weeks since I wrote anything for AP, but I finally got back in the rotation on Sunday. Things went pretty well, unless you’re a member of the Minnesota Twins. Two hits in nine innings isn’t going to cut it.

Many people never realize how much they rely on technology until it betrays them in a critical situation. Never was that more evident than Saturday night in the Metrodome pressbox when after seven innings my internet simply stopped working. When you need to write and send a game story, this is a problem. Although everything ultimately was completed, several minor errors resulted in the catastrophe, including the misspelling of Kevin Jepsen’s name somewhere in the process that was never caught — as evidence by my game story. My apologies to the Jepsen family. In all, a night to forget for me, but not for Jason Kubel.

This is a couple of days late, so obviously we know now that the White Sox play in Detroit on Monday afternoon and need a win to force a one-game playoff with the Twins on Tuesday. Should be exciting!

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire used the exact word I would have used to describe Friday’s game in general when he spoke of Francisco Liriano’s performance — clunker.
The Indians can only do the Minnesota so many favors…

The White Sox bats were once again asleep on Wednesday night, letting Nick Blackburn off the hook and helping inflate the shattered ego of Minnesota’s bullpen headed into the third straight game that the Twins can call their biggest of the season.
The two victories the last two nights were huge, but Minnesota still becomes a desperate baseball team with a loss tonight.

I didn’t look, but Matt Guerrier’s ERA may have gone down after only allowing a two-run homer in his one inning of work last night.
The Twins certainly know how to keep things interesting. Despite a simply awful month of baseball, they are now 1 1/2 games out of first place. Crazy.
Kubel got to 20 home runs last night, but my copy got edited in Morneau’s quote to say 19. Not sure what happened there, but I’m not taking credit for that one.

Its hard to believe that a team that just won back-to-back games for the first time since winning four straight from August 19-21 is just a game out of first place, but sure enough…
Kevin Slowey was awesome again, although he pretty much just toys with the Royals (3-0 in three starts against them this year, with an ERA less than 2.00).

Nothing like falling out of first place because you let the team with the worst record in baseball since the All-Star break come into your home ballpark and win despite losing its starting pitcher to injury in the third inning and replacing him with a guy who has been in Triple-A since mid-April.
Joe Mauer played well, but its looking more and more like the Twins might actually need help from someone besides Mauer to keep the magic going.

Francisco Liriano shows up and suddenly the Twins are in first place. Frankie looked a bit more svelte this time around, and he also looked more in control. His stuff wasn’t exactly in 2006 form, but he also didn’t look like a guy who could hurt himself at any minute — and he didn’t give up any runs. This could make for a fun final two months…
